USA mAG By The Numbers
Place your bets on who will make the US MAG World Team, Pan Am Games Team, National Team, and event title winners! A lot of the fun of sports is trying to guess what’s going to happen. You don’t need to know a Yurchenko from a Cassina to do that - you just need numbers. I have lots of those.
I started by making this sortable spreadsheet of all the scores of all the starters in this year’s National Championships. If a D score isn’t listed, it’s because it wasn’t available.
I used scores from the NCAA, USAG and international meets. Only Senior scores with 10 skill routines are listed. Scores from NCAA and domestic meets are tend to be higher than international scores. However, the NCAA score are still useful information. No one looking at them was too surprised when Sam Mikulak made the 2012 Olympic Team.
I did not list neutral deductions, but they are reflected in the final score. The NCAA has a stick bonus, but it’s not always reported, so I mostly didn’t worry about it (except for vault - I removed it when it was listed, because looking at vault D scores of 5.3 is just irritating). USAG bonus was also removed. Asterisks mark the people I know have two vaults.
I sorted the scores and created the chart below. The higher scorers tend to be at the top, but the ranking is not exact, as many people had the same score. The first grouping was the top 10 % of scores. The second grouping was the remainder of people who scored 14 or above. For a world team, the goal should be to try to avoid scoring lower than about 14 on anything. One high score was enough to earn a spot on the table. This is only a rough guide, as some people competed only once and others did the NCAA AA almost every week, still others mostly had international scores.
For more context, the table below scores on each event for the medal winning teams at the 2023 World Championships. These aren’t in any particular order, just a rough guide to scores that might be needed to medal. As for the USA, the lower scoring events are PH and HB. At this particular Worlds, everyone had problems with PH. That may not be the case in 2024.
Barring the unforeseen, I believe Asher Hong and Fred Richard will be on the Worlds team. Choose your own adventure for the rest of the team by looking at the tables and spreadsheet and guessing who can best fill in the rest of the spots.
USAG bonus will not be used to select the World team, but will be used for Pan Ams.
Don’t forget Paul Juda. He only competed once this year, so the listed scores may not be reflective of what he can do.
