NCAA Snapshot Week 7

Didn’t make it to any meets in person this weekend, so this is the view from my couch.

The View from My Couch

There wasn’t much men’s NCAA action this past weekend, and some of what there was reflected many athletes being rested for Winter Cup.

Oklahoma scored 400.6(D 152.1) against Simpson, but that doesn’t reflect what Oklahoma can do at full strength. The meet was a chance for Oklahoma to give freshmen and others not normally in the lineup a chance to compete, but not all of it went well. Fuzzy Benas and Colin Flores were being rested for Winter Cup.

Michigan rested Paul Juda, and Javier Alfonso, and had Fred Richard do watered down routines, and came away with a score of 407.57 (D 148.6) against Springfield and Arizona State.

Nebraska bounced back from last week’s sub 400 score in a big way with 412.9 (D 154.7). In the same meet Greenville broke its own school record, with a score of 395.7

California (393.15) competed against William and Mary (376.9) in a virtual meet. California also meets Stanford several times this season. This is to reduce the athletic department’s travel costs, which are going to shoot up even more when California joins the Atlantic Coast Conference next year (men’s gymnastics will remain in the MPSF).

Quick Hits

GymACT Arizona States’ score of 381.7 (D 132.1) against Michigan would make it competitive with some teams in the NCAA. Arizona’s Jackson Harrison is a crowd favorite wherever they go.

GymACT fact - Charlie Larson of Minnesota does a triple twisting double layout on floor.

Greenville will be competitive for a podium finish at the ECAC Championships. With a little luck, Greenville could even win.

Selection Procedures

Asher Hong, Colt Walker, and Khoi Young will be competing at the Cottbus World Cup this weekend. As all 2023 World medalists, (including the traveling alternate) are pre-qualified to Senior National Team, these gymnasts will retain their spots on the team, as will the two current Senior Development Team athletes.

Fred Richard is opting to rest to prepare for the long season ahead.

2023 World Team members Paul Juda and Yul Moldauer will be competing at Winter Cup.

After the pre-qualified athletes, “The top five athletes in rank order from all around final results (combined Day 1 & Day 2), not already named to the team.” Based on last year’s results, anyone who can get 80 or over in the AA has good chance of qualifying this way. The next group of 5 will come from the Men’s 10 Point Program. As Brody Malone will only be competing pommel horse, still rings, and parallel bars, if he is selected, it will be from this group.

Then come the specialist group - up to two athletes who are event winners and have a D score that would rank in the top 3 D scores from EF at 2023 Worlds.

▪ Floor: 6.4 ▪ Pommel Horse: 6.5 ▪ Rings: 6.3 ▪ Vault: 5.6 Avg. ▪ Parallel Bars: 6.4 ▪ High Bar: 6.2

Then the MPC decides according to criteria outlined in the selection document.

Total number of open spots = 5 from the AA + 5 from the points program + 2 specialists +?. I’m not finding any specific number for team size.

Check out the charts below for a snapshot of last weekend’s meets. Home scores are in red. Stick bonus is included in the D score. Neutral deductions are included in the E score.

For the purposes of the snapshots, These are meant to be a picture of the gymnastics that happened, not an official document.
