NCAA Snapshot week 6

GymACT Bay Area Bandits at Stanford

The View from My Couch

The Stanford team scored 410.3 points in their meet Saturday, but don’t be fooled into thinking that is any more reflective of the power of Stanford than the 392.85 they got the week before, as Team USA, comprised of four out of five gymnasts currently competing for Stanford scored 415.65 points even while counting a score in the nines.

The members of Team USA, are Asher Hong, Khoi Young, Colt Walker, Jeremy Bischoff, and Riley Loos (the only gymnast not currently competing NCAA).

Team USA ended up with a total D score of 167.1. I project Stanford will show up at the NCAA Championship with a total D score of close to 170. Taking a theoretical D score of 170 and adding Stanford’s average D score so far of around 250 points gives a guess at their potential score at the NCAA Championships of of around 420.

Illinois managed to outscore even Team USA with a 416.15 against Simpson and EVO, with help from the second highest team total and average E score (416.15/8.732) of the season.

I’m not a judge (not even close) so I can’t tell you if these scores are “too high”. Based on fundamental laws of human nature, they are 100 % accurate if it’s a team you root for. Otherwise. maybe not. It’s the human condition. It should all even out in the end when all the teams are in the same room in front of the same judges.

Quick Hits

Watch out for Curran Phillips. If he keeps hitting high bar (5.7/14.7) and parallel bars 6.9/15.8) as he did last weekend at EVO, he’s in the picture for Paris.

It’s long been a meme that the United States is bad at PH, but we have 3 guys just this week that hit routines with a D score high enough to medal at last year’s Worlds (Khoi Young actually did). Brandon Dang and Steven Nedoroscik are also capable 6.5 routines.

Winter Cup should provide an exciting pommel horse battle.

FYI - My couch view is what really stands out to me from the weekend. Other people do a great job of providing detailed meet reports (I’m sure better than I could), so I’m trying not to just repeat what other people are doing.
