NCAA Snapshot week 11

Michigan smashes the scoreboard (by Dall-E 3)

Into the NCAA season homestretch

Please point out errors if you spot any.

Stanford kicked off a weekend of big scores with its season-high score of 421.5, with Asher Hong scoring 86.05 in the all-around. Michigan returned fire with a score of 425.5 (the second-best NCAA score of this quad behind Stanford’s 426.325 in the 2022 NCAA prelims) and the top individual AA score of the season so far with an 86.95 from Fred Richard. Paul Juda did not compete.

Michigan finished with a total D score of 159.9. The only team to compete with more difficulty so far this season is Stanford. The Wolverines achieved the NCAA season’s highest total E score of 265.1 and the highest average E score per routine of 8.853. Penn State held its own with a season-high team score of 414.6 (official score 413.6 because of a 1-point injury deduction). Except for the pommel horse, Penn State stayed reasonably close to Michigan. Penn State has competed a total difficulty in the mid-150s several times, but this is by far their best score. They have the difficulty to contend for an NCAA final/podium spot if they put it all together.

Stanford wouldn’t leave anything to chance when facing Oklahoma, despite Oklahoma star Fuzzy Benas being in Germany for the DTB Cup. They competed the highest total difficulty of any team so far this season (165.4). Khoi Young and Asher Hong did their most difficult vaults. Stanford also achieved its highest total execution score so far this season. In addition to Oklahoma, California also competed. The highest number of execution points was collected by….California (basically tied with Oklahoma and Stanford, but 0.05 is still 0.05).

These execution scores are practically identical. Oklahoma would have had to average close to 9 in execution on every routine to catch Stanford.

In an interesting contrast to the Stanford meet, Illinois defeated Ohio State 413.2 to 406.35 by out executing Ohio State, as can be seen by the scores below. Most of the difference came on floor and high bar.
