NCAA Snapshot week 10
Weekend of upsets for some and showing they still got it for others.
Ohio State defeated Michigan 412.15 to 407.4. Who saw that coming? Certainly not me, but a look at some of the numbers the two teams have put up so far this season indicated it was possible. Both teams have been hovering around a total difficulty of 155, but before this, Ohio State had yet to break a total of 250 E points, and their highest team score was 400.6. Last Saturday they finally put it all together. Ohio scored 73,3 on vault, the highest score for any team so far this season. Michigan had lots of trouble on PH (63.5), and they were not able to capitalize on their advantage on parallel bars, still rings or high bar enough to make up the difference.
Nebraska’s defeat of Illinois probably surprised fewer people, given that Nebraska and Illinois differed by only 1.665 points in average total score coming in the meet. Illinois had the slight edge in execution, and Nebraska had a slight edge in difficulty. There wasn’t any standout disaster rotation for Illinois. Nebraska was just a bit ahead of them on every event until both teams got to high bar, on which Nebraska was less bad.
Stanford had yet to score over 416 this season…until now. The 416+ club now includes Oklahoma, Nebraska, Stanford, Michigan, and Illinois. Of this group, Stanford relies most heavily on difficulty for its scores. Air Force scored 396.45. They should be competitive with California for the third podium spot at MPSF.
Oklahoma rebounded from a low (for them) score of 409.55 the week before to score 415.3 at Navy. Oklahoma did this with their second lowest total difficulty so far this season (152.4) but made up for it with the second highest total E score (262.9) and average E (8.763). Navy’s score of 392.85 has them competitive for the ECAC Championship, despite the apparent loss of star Isiah Drake due to injury.
Greenville joined Oklahoma, Illinois, and Springfield as the only teams so far this season to get more than 260 total execution points (Nebraska, Army, and Michigan have come close).
At Springfield (393.35) and William and Mary (387.25) at Army (393.4), William and Mary scored a season high and Springfield and Army showed scores that could be competitive for a podium spot at the ECAC Championship.
This and That
The 4 score average difference between ECAC top ranked Navy and Greenville is 0.017 points, which for all practical purposes is nothing. If Greenville executes, they could be the ECAC Champion. I predict they will make the podium.
Compare and contrast the Oklahoma meets from 2/17/24 and 3/9/24. The total difficulty is almost identical, but the total scores sure aren’t. Not much difference between the average E score per routine, but those execution points sure add up.
